What is the procedure?
This procedure is a non-surgical technique that allows the physician or nurse
practitioner to replace the feeding tube. Gastrostomy tubes are usually replaced
once a year, (or more often if necessary), due to the normal breakdown of the
integrity of the tube through normal use. Occasionally a feeding tube is
inadvertently pulled out by the patient, or is dislodged due to other
circumstances. The tract through which the tube is placed will close in a matter
of hours if another tube is not put in the existing tract.
