What is the procedure?

This procedure allows the doctor or clinical nurse specialist to view the inside of your colon by using a lighted, flexible instrument called a sigmoidoscope. Air is used to expand the folds of the colon to better visualize the lining. You will be asked to undress from the waist down and will be given a drape. You will then lie down on your left side on the exam table. The instrument is inserted into the rectum. As it is advanced you will feel some fullness from the air, and possibly some mild cramping. Sedation is not required for this procedure. Taking slow, deep breaths will help you to relax and remain comfortable. The procedure takes approximately ten (10) minutes. Biopsies (tissue samples) may be taken during your exam. After your procedure, the findings will be discussed with you. Biopsy results take 5-7 working days. Remaining gas trapped within the intestines may cause abdominal discomfort. This will lessen or disappear in a few hours. Walking and drinking warm liquids may be helpful.
